Third Quarter Essay This quarter we did a lot of work. There wasn’t a day when we had nothing to do. This whole quarter was based on a research project. The research paper had three main parts to it. The first was reading a book and finding a social issue. The second was forming an opinion about that issue. The third was supporting our opinion with research to back it up. After we completed our research project, we had to then present it to the class. The book that I read was Nineteen Minutes, by Jodi Picoult. This had become one of my favorite books. It has so much meaning to it. The issues that I decided to research from this book was bullying and school violence. I Learned a lot from picking these topics for my research. Not only did I realize the effects that these issues have on people and schools, but I also learned a lot about reading books in general. There is so much more that you can do when just reading a book. If you can make meaning to the book, it can have a huge impact on your life. Everytime I read a book now, I am going to really look at the book differently. When I formed my opinion on bullying and school violence, I came up with the opinion that we need to stop these things from happening because nobody deserves to feel unsafe or scared at school or even in their life. I learned a lot about what kind of person I am going to try and be. I want to be someone who stands up for myself and others. I have never personally really been bullied, but I don’t want to be the girl standing in the corner watching other people get picked on. After I formed an opinion on my topic, I had to come up with some good research to back it up. I think that many people have opinions about things, but if you can’t support those opinions then they don’t really mean anything. While I was researching my topic, I learned a lot about strategies to research. This is something I think that is really going to help me in the future. I think that presenting to the class is quite scary. I also think that the more practice you get with talking in front of a group of people the better off you are. Everytime I do this, I get better and better at it. I get less and less scared. I really liked this research project, and learned a lot from it. Not only did I learn better techniques to research and write, but I also learned that we need to stand up for others.
